The Los Angeles Lakers are the busiest team heading into the last 48 hours of the trade deadline. The one name that seemingly does not go away in trade talks is D’Angelo Russell.

Now, it seems an unlikely team’s name has cropped up in trade talks for the streaking superstar. The Toronto Raptors entered into discussions for Russell. But basketball fans cannot make sense of their interest.

Every player other than their leading two superstars are potential trade candidate. So much so that GM Rob Pelinka mentioned that he is constantly on the phone with other teams. Dave McMenamin of ESPN noted that Russell and his contract are well-suited for a trade. He has a player option for next season and is paid $17 million this season. That is a pretty good number when considering his performances since returning to the starting lineup.

The case of the Toronto Raptors looking at Russell can be confusing for fans. After all, the team just traded two of their primary starters. And they are in a retooling phase. Bringing Russell in would throw the balance off their current squad. Moreover, if he does not opt into his player option for next season, the Raptors will lose not one but two players.

D’Angelo Russell is still an intriguing commodity for the Lakers. Since returning from a bruised tailbone, Russell has averaged 22.2 points, 2.3 rebounds, and 6.4 assists per game. He has consistently been the best scorer on the team. This pushed the Lakers to finish their road games 4-2. If he keeps this level of performance up, it could bode well for the Lakers down the stretch.

The Toronto Raptors have a lot of core young pieces in place. Even though they might not be good enough for a playoff run, they can be good trade pieces if they develop well. Trading for D’Angelo Russell may improve their chances of getting into the playoffs. But if the growth of the other youngsters is stunted, the Raptors stand at losing a lot more.
