“I’m been rooting since my crib for this legend” Trae Young and Ja Morant pay ultimate tribute to parting Serena Williams
Serena Williams
Serena Williams has announced her retirement from tennis after losing in the third round of the 2022 US Open to Ajla Tomljanovi. Despite the loss, Ja Morant, James Harden, Trae Young, and the other NBA stars who watched the game couldn’t help but admire the sports icon and her incredible performance.
Williams, 40, fought hard after losing the first set, extending the game with a 7-6 (7-4) performance in the second. Unfortunately, she couldn’t hold on as Tomljanovi dominated the final set to win. Williams had previously stated that she would retire after the US Open, so her 27-year tennis career came to an end on Friday. While the outcome was not what everyone had hoped for, there is no denying that Williams deserved all of the love and recognition in the world.
Serena Williams’ two-decade long career
Serena Williams, arguably the greatest player of all time, has rewritten the record books in a way that no tennis player, male or female, has ever done before. She has accomplished everything there is to achieve in sports, and she is still going strong even after becoming a mother. The most striking aspect of Williams is her level of dominance over the rest of the field. Few athletes, if any, have dominated their sport as much as Williams has; the gap between her and the next best players on tour has been astonishingly large for the better part of two decades. When she’s at her best, no other player can compete with her, let alone beat her.
Serena Williams first became known to the world as a 17-year-old with beaded braids, overwhelming power, and precocious intelligence and poise when she won the first of her 23 Grand Slam singles titles at the 1999 U.S. Open. So began a journey that, with the help of her sister Venus and her trailblazing parents, changed the game, transcended tennis, and transformed Williams into a beacon of fashion, entertainment, and business, changing the way people viewed female athletes both inside and outside of sports. After a span of 23 years, she in an interview said she was ready to bid adieu to the Tennis World and concentrate on her family.
Williams will be remembered as one of the best, if not the greatest, tennis players to ever step foot on a hard, clay, or grass court. Her nearly three decades of dominance is unprecedented, and her legacy as a 23-time Grand Slam singles champion (the most in the Open Era), four-time Olympic gold medalist, and the longest-running No. 1 female tennis player will live on. It certainly speaks volumes that athletes from other sports, like NBA players, speak so highly of her and show her that much appreciation. That is what it means to be great—to have qualities that transcend sport.
NBA stars, Politicians , Fans pay tribute to Williams
LeBron James of the Los Angeles Lakers sent a heartfelt message to the departing Serena Williams. “It’s been an honour to follow your journey,” he said. To see you achieve all of your goals, to see you break records, to see you just be amazing and transcend not only on the tennis court but also off.” He continued, “So I just wanna say thank you for just being this inspiration for so many. And never putting yourself out there when you didn’t feel like you were the greatest. And showing the world that every time you was out there, you were the greatest!”
Serena Williams received flowers from Ja Morant, while James Harden referred to her as the GOAT of tennis. Trae Young, on the other hand, couldn’t help but cry as she thanked the legend. Others, including Jalen Brunson and Trendon Watford, became emotional, while others, such as Darius Garland, simply thanked the tennis legend for everything she has done not only for the game but for the entire sports world.
