Trae Young, often quoted as the villain of the game, is hated by many, mostly due to his demeanor. Many, including Gilbert Arenas, would argue that he is treated differently than most NBA players. Recently, on the “From the Point” show, Gilbert Arenas talked about how Trae Young, arguably the most hated player in the NBA played a crazy series against the New York Knicks and wasn’t given enough credit for his performance.
Arenas, said to Young, “You know what’s crazy about that New York series? If that was any other player–if Luka did that to NY Knicks – they would be a god…It’s crazy how you went into the Garden & really f**ked them up… Most of [the] media is NY. …They personally took offense to what you did in the Garden.” Referring to the 2021 Atlanta Hawks series against the New York Knicks, Arenas talked about Trae Young’s amazing performance in the first game.
Arenas also compared Trae to Luka Doncic and how Doncic received much more fame and media time than Trae Young. The 2021 series was one when Trae Young had led his team to a playoff series after 4 years and were facing the Knicks, who too had taken a hiatus from the playoffs since 8 years. What conspired in game 1 was truly iconic.
Crown chanted “Fu*k Trae Young” but Young bashed the crowd up

The first game in the series was being played at Madison Square Garden, the Knicks’ home ground, and was after the pandemic got over. People turned out in huge numbers and were expecting the Knicks to take the game, but Trae Young had other plans. New York missed the first 14 out of 17 shots and got MAD. They took out their anger on Trae Young and chants started “F*ck Trae Young”, they said. Trae Young was not going to take it.
He got 32 points, 7 rebounds, and 10 assists in the game. As the buzzer was about to go off and 9 seconds were left on the clock with points leveled, he knew this was the time to shut up the Knicks crowd. He called for the throw, runner toward the rim, and hit an unbelievable floater with 0.9 seconds off the clock. “Ice Trae” showed exactly why people say he is ruthless when it comes to his opponents. He shut the whole arena up.
The Hawks’ playoff run eventually ended with them losing to the Bucks in the conference finals. Whether or not he is able to replicate the same magic this season is something to look out for. As Trae Young is being paired up with Pascal Siakam for this year, he sure will look to make an impact this season and lead his team to greater heights amidst rising competition in the league.
