The NBA has come down hard on Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant for his second social media incident involving a gun in less than three months.

Ja Morant, one of the league’s most exciting young players, will be suspended for the first 25 games of the 2023-24 season without pay after he was seen holding a firearm in a video that he streamed on Instagram Live in May. This was after he had already been suspended for eight games and fined $50,000 in March for brandishing a gun in a strip club.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced the 25-game suspension on Friday, saying Morant’s actions were “alarming and disconcerting”.

The potential for other young people to emulate Ja’s conduct is particularly concerning,” Silver said in a statement. “Under these circumstances, we believe a suspension of 25 games is appropriate and makes clear that engaging in reckless and irresponsible behavior with guns will not be tolerated.

But many fans compared the punishment to what former commissioner David Stern would have done in a similar situation, and concluded that Stern would have been much harsher and more decisive.

Many NBA Twitter users expressed their disappointment and frustration with the current commissioner Adam Silver, who they perceived as being too soft and lenient with Morant. They argued that Silver was sending the wrong message to the league and the fans, and that he was failing to uphold the integrity and reputation of the NBA.

Morant apologized for his behavior on Friday, saying he was sorry for the harm he had caused and promising to be better. “I hope you’ll give me the chance to prove to you over time I’m a better man than what I’ve been showing you,” Morant said in a statement.

The Grizzlies, who reached the playoffs last season with Morant as their leading scorer and playmaker, will have to start the season without their star for nearly a third of the season. They expressed their support for Morant and said they will work with him and the league to help him overcome his issues.
