During Game 3 of the first-round playoff series between the Memphis Grizzlies and the Los Angeles Lakers, Dillon Brooks was expelled from the game for a severe violation. With just under 12 minutes left in the third quarter, Brooks was defending LeBron James in the Lakers’ half of the court. When James executed a behind-the-back crossover, Brooks attempted to recover the ball by reaching out. He inadvertently struck James in the groin area and caused him to fall to the ground in considerable discomfort.
The referees deemed Brooks’ actions unnecessary and excessive. This led to his immediate expulsion from the game with a flagrant 2 foul. Regrettably, for him, this was not unexpected for many onlookers, given his past record of similar offenses. Therefore, this occurrence was undoubtedly not an isolated event.
No matter what the media or the fans say, Brooks doesn’t feel he was in the wrong in this incident. Per Brooks, his perception as the “villain” led to his suspension from the game. Brooks’ idea of being “the villain” seems to differ from NBA Fans who feel he’s just annoying and wrong. To exacerbate the situation, Brooks stated that he was not worried about James, a statement that came back to haunt him.

No matter what Brooks perceives as the reason for the punishment, most fans were happy to see him kicked out of the game. Brooks is clearly infamous for things that have nothing to do with his playing ability. From leading the league in technical fouls to controversial statements, he has it all. Now, for the first time, Brooks felt that he was the victim.
After he made the statements about James being “old” and his lack of fear for him, fans were after Brooks. Many people believed that he would eventually have to “eat his words” or “face the music” for his comments. However, no one anticipated that it would happen in the manner that it did. Fans have since taken to Twitter to roast Brooks for his terrible performance in the Grizzlies’ Game 3 against the Lakers. Brooks’ victim mentality kicking in for the first time signals the importance of the playoffs for him. With the Lakers now being 2-1 against the Grizzlies, it will be interesting to see Brooks’ next move. We could see a safer player in him or an even more sinister version.
