Tyler Herro may be out of commission with a broken hand, but he’s not out of the conversation. The Miami Heat guard showed that he still has some fire in him when he responded to a snarky remark from TNT analyst Stan Van Gundy.

Van Gundy, who has a reputation for being blunt and sometimes harsh, took a shot at Herro’s fashion choices during Game 5 of the Eastern Conference finals between the Heat and the Boston Celtics. He said that the Heat needed Herro back on the court because his outfits on the bench were so bad. “You know the No. 1 reason the Heat need Tyler Herro back? Because his fashion is so bad on the bench. We need him in uniform.

Herro was not amused by the comment and hit back at Van Gundy on his Instagram story. He shared a screenshot of a SportsCenter post that featured Van Gundy’s quote and a photo of Herro rocking a purple bucket hat and a black jacket. Herro added his own caption, saying: “My ‘fashion’ as bad as he was on the sideline.

Van Gundy’s coaching career was a sore spot for Herro, who didn’t hold back his criticism. Van Gundy had 13 seasons as an NBA head coach for four different teams, including the Pelicans in 2021. He had more wins than losses overall, but he also faced several firings and never got a championship ring. His closest shot was in 2009, when he led the Magic to the NBA Finals, only to fall to the Lakers in five games.

Herro and Van Gundy might be joking around or they might have some real tension. After all, Herro’s coach Erik Spoelstra used to be Van Gundy’s assistant in Miami, so they probably know each other well. Herro also laughed off Van Gundy’s comment with an emoji, which could mean he was not taking it personally.

But Herro crossed a line when he threw shade at Van Gundy’s coaching career. Van Gundy only criticized Herro’s outfit, not his game or his health.

Whatever their intentions, Herro and Van Gundy have added more drama to a thrilling series. The Heat are on the verge of reaching the NBA Finals. Herro’s is not playing Game 6 on Saturday night, but he will be cheering for his team to finish off the Celtics and silence Van Gundy.
