It is not often that a player from today’s generation can enact something a legend has done in the past. But Tyrese Haliburton managed to do that today against the New York Knicks. He managed to recreate a play done by the late great Kobe Bryant against the same team. Bryant made the move legendary due to the high level of difficulty involved. Haliburton’s move was similar in most aspects to that of Bryant’s.
With 8 minutes left in the 3rd quarter, Haliburton was at the three-point line trying to build up the next play. As soon as he saw a double-team develop, Haliburton was looking for who to pass to. But the double-team trapped all the passing lanes to his teammates. Haliburton then lobbed the ball onto the backboard, caught the rebound, and passed it to an open Pascal Siakam for an easy three. This is surprisingly similar to the move Bryant made 12 years ago.
The move Bryant made was slightly more difficult than Haliburton’s as Bryant had to push through the double-team and lob the ball onto the glass. Haliburton lobbed the ball as soon as the double team developed. However, the difficulty of the move is such that Bryant or Haliburton had to sell the play to their opponents with the lob to create that space for their teammate to score.
Having a high IQ and court vision is paramount to making the play come out successfully. Both Bryant and Haliburton showed it in plenty to develop the play and then use their court vision to finish the pass to their open teammate.
Tyrese Haliburton used Kobe Bryant’s move to beat the same team
Tyrese Haliburton and the Indiana Pacers went up against the Knicks today in a battle of the East’s two playoff teams. Both teams have been struggling since the start of the month and need to stabilize while dealing with injuries. While the Knicks had the lead in the first quarter, the Pacers took over and rallied to never lose the lead again.
The Pacers won the game 125-111 behind double-digit performances from Haliburton and 5 of his teammates. The Knicks who were without a couple of their starters struggled to match up with the high-flying offense of the Pacers.
Tyrese Haliburton led his team to a victory over their playoff rivals. Using the late Kobe Bryant’s move made things sweeter as they got the win.
