In a recent episode of “The OGs” podcast, Miami Heat veteran Udonis Haslem voiced his disapproval of LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers’ grand celebration for winning the NBA’s In-Season Tournament. Haslem, known for his straightforward approach, criticized the Lakers for what he perceives as an over-the-top reaction to their victory.

Haslem’s comments come in the wake of the Lakers’ decision to pop champagne and hang a banner following their win in the newly introduced tournament. Haslem believes only winning an NBA championship warrants such celebrations.

"What we ain't going to do is pop champagne and put up banners, we ain't gonna do that. Not for that... Bron [LeBron James], you my dog, I love you. Come on, King. You know what you are playing for, you know what you work out every summer. That 500,000, the rich get richer. Bron, AD- [Anthony Davis] don't need that."

The NBA In-Season Tournament, a new addition to the league’s format, was designed to increase competition and fan engagement during the regular season. While Haslem commended the tournament for its competitive nature, he remains firm on his stance regarding the manner of its celebration.

Udonis Haslem’s illustrious NBA career

Haslem’s experience and perspective on the game’s traditions and values appear to be the source of his criticism. Having played in the NBA for 20 seasons, all with the Miami Heat and winning two championships alongside LeBron James, Haslem emphasizes the importance of focusing on the larger goals in the league.

Beyond his recent comments, he has been a significant figure in the NBA, particularly during the 2020 NBA bubble. He played a crucial role in the players’ meeting following the Milwaukee Bucks’ decision to boycott a playoff match, urging LeBron James to outline a plan post-boycott.

Haslem’s leadership extends beyond the court. The Heat organization highly regards Haslem’s off-court influence, valuing his game insights. Approaching the end of his career, the former star’s opinions still resonate with the basketball community.
