Eric Lewis is known to be one of the most reputed referees in the NBA. He has been with the NBA for over 19 years and has officiated 80 playoff games. His reputation was under fire a lot last season, especially after his alleged burner account was found. In that account, he would argue with people on X who criticized NBA referees.
He was also criticized for making a no-call during a game between the Los Angeles Lakers and Boston Celtics. He did not call a foul even though there was clear contact initiated by Jayson Tatum on LeBron James on the game-winning layup. This resulted in Lakers fans trolling him throughout the season, and his alleged burner account engaging in arguments with Lakers fans. Lewis was put under investigation after his account was discovered. This investigation was a primary reason he was not selected to officiate the NBA Finals last season despite his impressive resume.
Amidst the ongoing investigation, if the allegations had been proven true, it would have severely damaged his reputation. Consequently, Lewis informed the league that he intended to retire from officiating. Subsequently, the investigation against the 52-year-old referee was immediately closed.Β
The NBA released a memo stating, “NBA referee Eric Lewis has informed the league office that he is retiring, effective immediately. In light of his decision, the NBA’s investigation into social media activity has been closed.”
Fans rejoice as Eric Lewis announces retirement

Fans around the league have been skeptical about Eric Lewis’ officiating due to the number of games the Boston Celtics won while he was officiating them. Since the 2019-20 season, the Celtics have won 85 percent of the games officiated by Lewis. Therefore, when he announced his retirement, fans around the league rejoiced. Here are some of the reactions:
It remains unclear if the account was indeed Lewis’, as the investigation didn’t reach a conclusion due to him announcing his retirement. However, all signs point to the apparent outcome, especially considering the timing of the announcement. Fans might never receive a definite conclusion.
