Nikola Jokic’s journey from a second-round pick to an NBA champion and Finals MVP is one of the most remarkable stories in basketball history. The Denver Nuggets center dominated the Miami Heat in the NBA Finals, averaging 30.2 points, 14 rebounds and 7.2 assists per game on incredible shooting splits of 58.3% from the field and 42.1% from 3-point range.
But while Nikola Jokic has earned his place among the NBA legends, he has also shown that he is not too concerned about individual honors. In fact, he revealed that he has lost his Bill Russell trophy, which is given to the NBA Finals MVP, and he does not know where it is.
In an interview with Malika Andrews on ESPN on Wednesday, Jokic said that he left the trophy in the room of longtime Nuggets equipment manager Sparky Gonzales, but when he went back, it was gone.
“I really don’t know. I left it in Sparky’s room and it’s not there anymore. So I don’t know. But hopefully it can arrive in my house,” Jokic said.
Malika noted that Jokic was the first Finals MVP she interviewed who did not bring the trophy with him. Jokic explained that basketball is not the main thing in his life, and that he is more focused on his family and his horses.
“Basketball is not the main thing in my life. It’s something that I’m good at,” Jokic said.

Nikola Jokic’s casual attitude towards his trophy sparks reactions on NBA Twitter
Nikola Jokic’s casual attitude towards his trophy sparked a lot of reactions on NBA Twitter, with some fans joking that LeBron James stole it so he can get closer to Michael Jordan’s six championships and six Finals MVPs. Others said that Jokic losing his trophy is on-brand for him, as he is known for being laid-back and humble.
Here are some of the best reactions from Twitter:
The story, fortunately, has a happy ending, like many aspects of the Nuggets’ season. Malika later reported that Gonzales is in possession of the trophy, which will be ready for the Nuggets’ championship parade on Thursday.
Jokic will surely be happy to see his trophy again, but he will also be eager to return to his native Serbia, where he plans to attend a horse race on Sunday. He owns several horses and is passionate about equestrian sports.
Jokic may have lost his trophy for a while, but he has not lost his sense of humor or his love for life. He is a unique and relatable NBA champion who does not let fame or fortune change him.
