Given the WNBA star Brittney Griner is probably going through the worst time of her life, being trapped in Russia. Expecting the most help from her homeland and its embassies, the 31-year-old was let down as she could not talk to her wife due to a logistical error. What’s even worse? It was the couple’s anniversary.

White House press secretary Karine Jean Pierre revealed that the State Department is looking to arrange a new call between Brittney Griner and her wife as an unfortunate error ensured that the pair could not speak on their anniversary. This was the first time in their four-year anniversary that the couple wasn’t together. To those who are not aware, the call was to be patched through by the US Embassy in Russia. Cherelle Griner informed that she tried calling her beloved- ‘11 times’ before realising about the logistical error.

Karine Jean-Pierre said she had no information about whether President Joe Biden would meet with Cherelle Griner, but said: “The State Department has been in regular touch with Mrs. Griner. She’s also spoken with Secretary (Antony) Blinken. Any American who is held abroad is a priority for this president.”

This was an unfortunate mistake,” Jean-Pierre said Tuesday, adding that, “the Department of State is working to rectify this as quickly as possible.”

To make everyone aware and land onto the same page of information, the State Department in May designated Brittney Griner as wrongfully detained, moving her case under the supervision of its special presidential envoy for hostage affairs, effectively the government’s chief hostage negotiator. Russian state-run news agency Tass reported last week that her detention had been extended until July 2. Moreover, Vladimir Putin’s spokesman even revealed that the WNBA star would not be treated any differently to local citizens being detained for the same crime.

With the tension and anxiety of Griner’s family and friends rising every passing day, the primary question still remains, when will the 31-year-old WNBA star safely to her homeland? Hopefully we await an official answer sooner rather than later.
