On January 26, 2020, the basketball world mourned the loss of one of its brightest stars and greatest icons. Kobe Bryant and his daughter, Gianna Bryant, were among the nine people who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash in Calabasas, California. They were on their way to a youth basketball game at the Mamba Sports Academy, where Gianna was following in her father’s footsteps on the court.

At the young age of 13, Gianna Bryant, affectionately known as “Gigi,” exhibited exceptional talent and devotion to basketball. She played for her father’s Mamba Sports Academy team. Gianna aspired to play basketball for UConn and in the WNBA, reflecting her considerable aspirations for the future. More than three years have passed since the death of Kobe and Gigi, but their lives will be celebrated forever.

It is Gigi Bryant’s birthday today, and her mom Vanessa Bryant is celebrating it in the most heart-warming way. Vanessa, alongside Nike, launched the #playgigisway, where people from all across the basketball world spoke about what playing Gigi’s way means to them. The video featured Sabrina Ionescu, Aubrey Callaghan, Pau Gasol, Jon Grogan, and Giannis Antetokounmpo. All of them spoke about how playing Gigi’s way made them the best version of themselves and how it motivated them. Watch the heart-warming video for more!

To celebrate Gigi’s legacy, Vanessa Bryant and Nike also launched The Kobe 6 Protro ‘Mambacita Sweet 16’. This becomes the first pair of shoes to be released as a part of the Kobe Bryant X Nike Deal. Vanessa Bryant also sent multiple pairs of shoes to various people, including Sabrina Ionescu and others.

Gigi’s birthday marks a celebration of life for the Bryants, who now run the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation. Vanessa Bryant has undertaken various initiatives and events to preserve her daughter’s memory. To honor Gigi, she established a clothing line named Mambacita, the profits from which are directed to the Mamba and Mambacita Sports Foundation. This non-profit organization aims to encourage and support young girls and women in sports.  

Vanessa Bryant has also made constant efforts to encourage the teammates who played with Gigi. The “Mamba Girls” have received plenty of support from Vanessa, who cheers on them and attends a multitude of their games. She has also gifted the girls custom-made jewelry, sneakers, and apparel that feature Gigi’s name and number.
