Hyped to the core, Victor Wembanyama finally made his first appearance in the NBA Summer League recently and nobody thought the performance was at par or up to the standards set for him. The game versus Charlotte Hornets was won by the Spurs but the rookie had a weak footing, seen confused at times during plays and not initiating anything himself in the game.

He took 13 shots but only 2 went in, reacting to which he said in the presser, “Honestly, I didn’t really know what I was doing. I’m trying to learn.” Expectations sure were high for this game as the tickets were sold out ahead of time. The last time this happened was during Zion Williamson‘s debut in 2019 for the New Orleans Pelicans.

Among other things, he missed a layup that a 10 year could make, shot an airball, and got humiliated by Kai Jones. He sure was happy about the win, but not about his performance. “I’m trying to learn for the next games, and the important [thing] is to be ready for the season,” Wemby admitted post-game.

Wembanyama had just nine points, eight rebounds, and three assists in his first summer game. But there were a few bright spots – his passing, playmaking, and defensive abilities. He blocked well and had the ball running down the court efficiently whenever he could. After all of this, Wembanyama did somewhat showed the required humility.

This game was a stepping stone and should be a learning curve for Wembanyama to learn how to play in the real leagues. We hope that he will get comfortable soon enough with the game or the internet will be quick enough to label him “The biggest bust of NBA” from the “best draft pick ever”. Internet sure does not waste any time.

The good news though, is that there is enough evidence to prove that this was just an off night. Victor, hopefully, will be up and running to his best in the next game against the Portland Trail Blazers.
