Glen “Big Baby” Davis is not impressed by Victor Wembanyama, the French phenom who has taken the NBA by storm. The former Boston Celtics star thinks he could have handled the 7-foot-6 rookie with ease, despite his incredible wingspan and skill.

The length I probably would have struggled with, but the body? Tomato chest. They soft. That boy looked like a little baby Bambi out there the other night, a little baby giraffe… I don’t think he could handle all this pain,” Davis told NBA reporter Ben Golliver at a promotional event for the upcoming Showtime show “Goliath”, which chronicles the life and legacy of Wilt Chamberlain, on Thursday in Las Vegas.

The comments were, no doubt, about the disappointing first game at the Summer League, as Wembanyama looked confused and was not at the best of his game. He scored just nine points, eight rebounds, five blocks, and three assists. Although, he recovered and had a much better second game with 27 points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks. He looked much better in the game and looked more decisive.

Does Victor Wembanyama really stand no chance of going big because of his body?

Although people, including Glen Davis, might think that attacking him physically might offer them success initially as Wembanyama figures his way around the league and how physical it might be. But, it will surely not be a “one-trick-pony” kind of trick that everyone will be able to use effectively against him. Davis also said he “probably” would have struggled with Wembanayama’s length.

Wembanyama’s 8-foot wingspan is a nightmare for defenders, who struggle to find openings against his long arms and quick feet. But what makes him unique is his combination of agility, finesse, and freakish length. He doesn’t need to pack on muscle like Joel Embiid to dominate. He needs to work on his core stability, which will help him hold his ground and unleash his full potential.

As the game continues to develop, it will be interesting to see how players play around Victor Wembanyama as he has a taste of what the NBA feels like and will work on contextualizing his game until the actual games. Time will tell where this unique NBA prospect, with an unprecedented height and exceptional skill level, will ultimately end up.
