The NBA has found another generational talent to draft after a long time. France’s Victor Wembanyama is a name that has been highly discussed even before the 7’3 center entered the league. The only comparison for Wembanyama is the 2003 #1 draft pick, LeBron James. Yes, Wembanyama has been compared to the likes of Magic Johnson and James when they were drafted.
While other draft prospects in the past few years have been special, Wembanyama is like no other. Even King James labeled him an alien, saying, “Everybody’s been a unicorn over the last few years. But he’s more like an alien — no one has seen anyone as tall as he is but as fluid and as graceful as he is on the floor.”
Well, now the alien might have a destination that he’ll soon be reaching. The NBA Draft Lottery just concluded and the San Antonio Spurs were awarded the #1 overall pick. Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, and the Houston Rockets followed with the second, third, and fourth picks respectively. While it isn’t officially confirmed that Spurs will be pursuing Wembanyama as their choice of the #1 pick, it is obvious. Wembanyama is a name every team has been after, as the media reports it.
Wembanyama didn’t waste any time in highlighting he couldn’t wait to step foot in the NBA. Immediately after the Draft Lottery, he made a tweet, signaling it was only a matter of time before he took over.
Wembanyama also gave an interview where he was asked what the NBA could expect from him. Just like one would expect, Wemby said, “I’m trying to win a ring ASAP. So be ready.”
After ‘Wembanyama noise’, find out more about the NBA Draft Lottery: How does it work?
With the NBA Draft Lottery results now officially being out, Victor Wembanyama can now predict his destination. He will probably follow in the footsteps of Spurs Hall of Famer Tim Duncan. Wemby might be close in saying he wants to win the ring “ASAP” as Duncan won a ring in only his second season. The other prospects that the world will keep an eye on are Scoot Henderson, Brandon Miller, and Amen Thompson, to name a few. While Henderson argued he should be the first pick in the draft, it doesn’t seem like that is happening.
So, how does the NBA Draft Lottery work? The Draft Lottery includes 14 teams who don’t make it to the NBA Playoffs. On April 17, the final odds were established after resolving tiebreakers among teams that had the same regular-season records.
To ensure fairness, the NBA Draft Lottery has implemented a system where the team with the poorest record will be guaranteed at least the fifth pick. This new approach equalizes the chances at the top of the lottery, granting each of the three teams with the worst regular-season records a 14 percent probability of securing the top pick. Following the drawing for the first four selections, the remaining lottery teams will make their picks in reverse order of their regular-season standings.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens on the day of the NBA Draft. The 77th edition of the NBA Draft goes down on the 22nd of June at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
