Victor Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, has already faced a lot of criticism and ridicule from NBA fans on social media after his first appearance with the San Antonio Spurs on Saturday.
The 19-year-old French center, who has been hailed as the most promising draft prospect since LeBron James, spoke to the media, met with Spurs employees, and participated in a light workout in his new No. 1 jersey. However, his first impression was far from impressive, as many fans pointed out his lack of strength, among other things.
Wembanyama’s debut was marred by several embarrassing moments, such as his wild first pitch at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday before he flew to San Antonio. The 7-foot-4 big man threw a pitch that missed the catcher completely. Many fans compared him to rapper 50 Cent, who famously threw one of the worst first pitches ever in 2014.
Some fans also criticized Wembanyama’s appearance, saying that he looked too skinny, frail, or awkward for an NBA player. They doubted that he could handle the physicality and intensity of the league, or that he could match up against other big men.

Victor Wembanyama meets with Spurs legends, gains valuable wisdom
Wembanyama had a special dinner with Spurs icons, Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and Manu Ginobili on Friday night. Understandably, the rookie couldn’t stop gushing about how much wisdom they imparted to him in their brief time together.
“I feel like I learned more about the NBA in a few hours than I ever did in my whole life,” Wembanyama said in the presser afterward. “It was amazing to see how these people, who are so beloved by the city of San Antonio and the franchise, are so humble and generous, because they really wanted to share with me their experience.”
Wembanyama’s arrival comes at a time when the Spurs have begun to rebuild after consecutive seasons of missing the playoffs. Fans hope that Wembanyama will be a jolt to the rebuild under coach Gregg Popovich that the team sorely needs.
The Spurs have won five NBA titles – most recently in 2014 when they beat the Miami Heat in five games. Now with Wembanyama’s arrival, they hope to win another one soon.
