Every NBA Draft brings exciting young prospects to look out for with it. The 2023 NBA Draft is no different. With teams hurrying around in excitement for the French prospect Victor Wembanyama, the expectations are riding high. Wembanyama is expected to be the first pick and the most promising prospect, according to general consensus.

NBA analysts from across the league are discussing Wembanyama’s excellence. Moreover, his performance in the LNB Pro A league has fans and critics excited. There’s no doubt that Wembanyama is one of the most looked-forward-to players to play in the 2023-23 NBA season. However, the expectations on the young center keep on piling up as many are already comparing him to established veterans. Quite recently, NBA analysts Chris Broussard and Nick Wright argued about what a successful career should be like for Wembanyama.

Chris Broussard and Nick Wright were talking about what and how high the expectations from Victor Wembanyama should be. “Here’s what I’m saying. These are my expectations for him,” Broussard said, starting his analysis. “If Wemby is Anthony Davis or Kevin Durant. If he’s Hakeem Olajuwon, he has not met expectations. His expectations are to have a career like LeBron (James), (Michael) Jordan, (Tim) Duncan, Shaq (O’Neal) or Kareem (Abdul-Jabbar). That’s what the expectations are.”

Wright, on the other hand, argued that those expectations are too high for a rookie like Wembanyama at this moment. “Let’s guarantee his health. I still think these are unfair expectations. They were unfair to LeBron. He did (live up to it) but they have clouded and polluted the way he’s been talked about for twenty years,” he said. “These expectations are off the charts. I don’t think it’s fair to him. If the standard is he’s gotta be Tim Duncan or he’s a bust. I don’t think it’s fair to him.”

With Victor Wembanyama as the most promising prospect, teams were hoping to get the first pick in the draft lottery. The Portland Trailblazers, Houston Rockets and Charlotte Hornets were all in the race for the first pick. However, the San Antonio Spurs will now get a chance to secure the young French Center as they landed the first pick.

The San Antonio Spurs have been one of the most reputed sides in the NBA. They won four championships between 1999 and 2007 and their fifth in 2014. However, in recent years, the Spurs haven’t had the best runs as a franchise. They have struggled to make an impact and had a poor 2022-23 NBA season. Moreover, the Spurs roster hasn’t been a serious title contender for a while now.

With Victor Wembanyama looking for a home in the NBA and the Spurs trying to turn their fortunes around, the two are likely to team up for the 2023-24 NBA season. However, with comparisons to Tim Duncan, Wembanyama surely has a ton of expectations on his shoulder. It will be interesting to see how the young rookie plays in his first year. While the Spurs would look to make it to the playoffs, Wembanyama would like to make an impact straight away.
