19-year-old basketball star Victor Wembanyama has dealt a blow to France’s FIBA World Cup aspirations for the second consecutive major tournament. After missing EuroBasket 2022 due to an injury, hopes were high that Wembanyama would make a return at the 2023 FIBA World Cup. However, in a recent interview with L’Equipe, the talented young player revealed his difficult decision to skip the tournament.

Wembanyama cited both his development and health as the primary reasons behind his choice. “It would not be realistic in terms of development and not prudent in terms of health,” Wembanyama told L’Equipe. “I hope people will understand. It’s frustrating for me too. The France team is still as central. I want to win as many titles as possible with her. But I think it’s a necessary sacrifice.”

Having played every game in the French League this past season and with plans to do the same in the upcoming NBA season, Wembanyama’s decision appears wise from a health standpoint. He made it clear that the San Antonio Spurs, his NBA team, would have supported his choice regardless.

While Wembanyama regrets missing out on the World Cup, his focus remains firmly on the future. With the 2024 Paris Olympics on the horizon, he is eyeing the gold medal as the perfect occasion to clinch his first title with the French national team.
