Warriors HC Steve Kerr RESCUES awful list of exclusive coaches who got ‘fired’
The Trend of Championship-Winning Coaches Getting Fired in the NBA
The NBA coaching carousel is in full swing, with several championship-winning coaches getting fired in recent years. The latest to join the list is Mike Budenholzer, who was fired by the Milwaukee Bucks after a disappointing end to a season filled with high expectations. Despite leading the Bucks to their first NBA championship in 50 years just two seasons ago, Budenholzer was let go after the team failed to advance past the first round of the playoffs.
Budenholzer’s firing comes on the heels of Nick Nurse’s dismissal by the Toronto Raptors. Nurse, who led the Raptors to their first championship in franchise history in 2019, was also shown the door after a string of disappointing seasons. Frank Vogel, who won a championship with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2020, was also let go after the team failed to make the playoffs last year.
The trend of championship-winning coaches getting fired is alarming, but it’s becoming increasingly common in the NBA. Steve Kerr, the head coach of the Golden State Warriors and a four-time NBA champion, weighed in on the issue. Kerr expressed his disappointment at the news of Budenholzer’s firing and emphasized the volatility of the coaching profession.
“This is the business we’re in,” Kerr said. “It happens quickly. Expectations every year for every team are so high, and only one team can win. It’s sad news for the coaching profession. We all believe Bud deserved a lot better. We also are aware that this is the job we chose and we’re all vulnerable.”

Despite the team’s success, Budenholzer’s coaching style has been criticized for being too reliant on star player Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Bucks’ offensive scheme under Budenholzer has been criticized for being too predictable and not making use of the team’s other weapons. The team’s inability to make adjustments during the playoffs has also been a point of contention.
Despite these criticisms, Budenholzer has an amazing overall record with the Bucks. During his five-year stint, he achieved a 271-120 record, the greatest mark in the league at that time. Additionally, he guided the team to a 38-23 mark in the playoffs.
The Bucks have not yet revealed Budenholzer’s replacement as head coach. In a statement, the team’s general manager, Jon Horst, thanked Budenholzer for his contributions to the team’s success.
“The decision to make this change was very difficult,” said Horst. “Bud helped lead our team for five incredible seasons, to the Bucks’ first title in 50 years, and into an era of sustained success. We are grateful for the culture of winning and leadership that Bud helped create in Milwaukee.”
While Kerr expressed his disappointment for Budenholzer, many NBA fans are wondering whether the Warriors head coach will join the list of championship-winning coaches who got fired if the Warriors don’t win it all this year.
