WATCH: 2023 NBA Slam Dunk Contest participant KJ Martin destroys 3x DPOY Rudy Gobert with a MONSTROUS putback jam
This year’s NBA Slam Dunk Contest will feature another contestant from the Houston Rockets, as KJ Martin is reportedly committed to showing off his capabilities. It is a natural fit and every fan will be eager to see what Martin will contribute. Martin has established a reputation for his thunderous dunks, insane blocks, and high-jumping prowess since joining the league.
“Houston Rockets high-flying forward KJ Martin has committed to the NBA Slam Dunk Contest at All-Star Weekend in Salt Lake City, sources tell The Athletic,” journalist Shams Charania revealed on Twitter. Further, he added: “The 6-foot-7 wing is in midst of a breakout season, averaging 10.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 55 percent shooting.”
Rockets high-flying Martin sparked the excitement of all the fans with a tremendous putback jam on Rudy Gobert in the game against the Timberwolves not long after he announced he will participate in this year’s dunk contest.
As a bench player for the Rockets, Martin is enjoying a strong season. Despite Houston’s dismal record, he has been more open to staying put recently than he was when he first asked for a trade in the off-season.
Martin averages 10.4 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.4 assists while shooting 31.7 percent from beyond the arc and 55 percent from the field overall. He has a non-guaranteed contract with the Rockets through 2024 and averages 24 minutes per game.
After the team’s defeat against the Timberwolves, Rockets coach Stephen Silas underlined sustainability
With 5 minutes and 40 seconds left in the second quarter, the Houston Rockets led the Minnesota Timberwolves by 20 points. But in the end, Houston was defeated in a 104-96 defeat on Sunday night at the Toyota Center. The Rockets wasted a double-digit lead, the third time in ten games that they had at least a 15-point advantage.
Houston’s coach, Stephen Silas, blamed their season-long offensive struggles for their deficiencies. But the Rockets’ primary sustainability problem was brought to light by the loss to the Timberwolves.
“Maybe complacency is the word,” Silas said. “We are trying to get to the point where we are trying to maintain the level of play that gets us these leads. It’s obvious we have the ability to get to these leads. But sustainability is the biggest part of the NBA.”
In defeats to the Timberwolves, Dallas Mavericks, and Orlando Magic, the Rockets held an average lead of 13.2 points. The Rockets consistently showed adequate offensive execution with their ball movement and shot creation during each game. Silas feels the most recent illustration of the growing pains of leading a young team through a difficult rebuild is learning how to preserve sustainability.
