Phoenix Mercury’s star player, Brittney Griner, recently made a highly-anticipated comeback to the basketball court after spending ten months detained in Russia. Since her return, Griner has been making a significant impact, showcasing her remarkable skills and leading her team with determination. Despite a recent loss against the Dallas Wings, Griner proved her worth by leading the Phoenix Mercury with 18 points.
Unfortunately, a troubling incident unfolded at the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport in Texas shortly after the game. Reports indicate that a vlogger confronted Brittney Griner, subjecting her to provocative remarks and disrespectful behavior. The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and the Mercury both responded quickly to the incident by issuing official statements condemning the upsetting interaction.
Following the incident, the vlogger responsible, Alex Stein, a self-proclaimed right-wing provocateur, took to Twitter and posted a video of the infamous interaction with the 2014 WNBA champion. In the video, Stein can be seen asking Brittney Griner, “Do you want to boycott America, Brittney?” He further said, “She hates America,” as authorities attempted to intervene and maintain order.

WNBA and Brianna Turner condemn vlogger’s provocative Remarks
The WNBA wasted no time in addressing the distressing incident at the airport, issuing a statement to express their concern and support for Brittney Griner. The league revealed that Griner had received authorization to fly charter for WNBA games. The WNBA emphasized its commitment to the safety and well-being of its players, confirming that security personnel had been assigned to Griner.
One of Griner’s teammates, Brianna Turner, also condemned the incident and demanded better treatment for WNBA players. Turner expressed her dismay, highlighting that the harassment faced by players, with individuals following them and making wild remarks, is never acceptable. She described the tense atmosphere at the airport, where the team huddled nervously in a corner, unsure how to proceed. Turner’s emphasized the urgent need for improved player safety and protection.
“Player safety while traveling should be at the forefront, Turner said. “People following with cameras saying wild remarks is never acceptable. Excessive harassment. Our team nervously huddled in a corner unsure how to move about. We demand better.”
Moving forward, it is crucial for the WNBA and its teams to reassess their security protocols and ensure that players are shielded from harassment and provocation, especially in public spaces. The league’s fast response to the incident demonstrates its dedication to addressing these concerns and implementing measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
