Watch: Buddy Hield scores the quickest 3-Pointer in NBA history

Buddy Hield shooting over Darius Garland

Buddy Hield was for sure in a hurry on Thursday against the Cleveland Cavaliers. As much as he loves shooting 3-point shots, it was also apparent that he doesn’t like waiting when he gets the opportunity to shoot one. Hield made the NBA record for the quickest 3-point shot made in NBA history. He drilled the three-pointer just three seconds into the game and got his name registered for a record.

The Indiana Pacers guard entered the game against the Cavaliers shooting 41.9% from beyond the arc. Hield so far also holds the record for the most 3-pointers made (137) this season. But what happened on the play, is perhaps why he is on the top of the 3-point list this season. In the opening jump ball between Jarrett Allen and Myles Turner, Allen tipped the Ball to Hield. The Pacers‘ star guard then just turned around and shot the ball over Darius Garland.

That’s the fastest 3-pointer to start a game during the NBA’s play-by-play era, which began in 1996. With scoring within 3 seconds, Hield broke the record of former NBA great and one of the greatest 3-point shooters Reggie Miller. Miller had the record since 2000 when he drained a three-pointer in just 4 seconds of the game.

Indiana Pacers defeated the packed Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday, who still led the game by 4 points in the first half. 4 players from the Pacers scored more than 20 points and 5 scored in double digits in a crucial game. Leading the Pacers’ offense was Tyrese Haliburton, the assists leader of the league this season. Haliburton scored game-high 29 points and dropped 9 dimes for the Pacers.

Hield scored 25 points in just 33 minutes of the game and made 5 of 6 three-point shots in the game. Pacers rookie Bennedict Mathurin scored 23 points along with Aaron Nesmith who scored 22 points as they defeated Cleveland 135-126. Cavs lost the game despite 7 players scoring in double figures. However, only Donovan Mitchell scored more than 20 points in the game. Mitchell scored team-high 28 points, and Caris LeVert and Jerrett Allen both scored 19 points each.

It was the 14th loss for the Cavaliers this season but they have maintained a highly impressive record in the tight Eastern Conference. With 22 wins so far into the season Cavs are 4th in the Eastern Conference, just below some of the top teams in the league. Indiana is 6th in the same conference, and behind Haliburton and Hield, they have made an excellent comeback in the season.
