Alabama Crimson Tide star Brandon Miller and head coach Nate Oats have been at the forefront of controversy. Miller, a top-5 projected pick, was not charged in relation to the murder of Jamea Harris, despite driving the loaded gun to ex-teammate Darius Miles, who allegedly used it in the murder. This decision has caused outrage, with many criticizing the NCAA and the University of Alabama for not taking the situation seriously enough.
He sparked yet another uproar with his signature pat-down introductions. As it turned out, Crimson tide starters were introduced, and every player did a specific handshake with a walk-on. When it was Miller’s turn, he extended both arms out and was patted down as though he were being searched for weapons.
“Before I get started on the game, it was my brought to my attention after the game about our pregame introductions,” head coach Nate Oats said. “I think that’s something that’s been going on all year. I don’t really know. I don’t really watch our introductions. I’m not involved with them.
Fans, however, have pointed out that Miller has been doing this all season, making Nate Oats’ claim that he was unaware of it odd. The player has continued to be a star for the Crimson Tide, scoring a career-high 41 points this week. After a closely contested game between the Crimson Tide and the Razorbacks, it was No. 2 Alabama who edged out the win 86-83.
Brandon Miller’s signature pat-down introduction garners criticism
Brandon Miller and the Crimson ride competed against Arkansas this weekend. And his pregame introduction has garnered criticism amid the murder controversy. The signature introduction saw him walking through smoke and being “frisked” and “patted down” by a teammate.
At his post-game news conference, Coach Oats addressed the issue surrounding the youngster. He claimed that the issue was brought to his notice after the game and that it was unacceptable. Oats further promised the media that it would never happen again.
Coach Nate Oats further defender the university’s handling of the murder controversy, stating that they have taken it seriously from day one. He claimed that he called Athletic Director Greg Byrne as soon as he got the information and that they had discussed the severity of the situation.
He also praised Byrne’s response to the issue and stated that he didn’t have much to add to it. However, some remain skeptical of the university’s response and believe that they should have done more to address the situation.
The controversy surrounding Miller and the University of Alabama is likely to continue as March Madness approaches.
While Miller’s abilities are unquestionable, his involvement in a murder and the controversy surrounding his selection may prompt some NBA clubs to pass on him in the forthcoming draught. Furthermore, the handling of the problem by the University of Alabama has raised questions about their priorities and responsiveness to severe issues.
While the NCAA continues to deal with concerns of violence and misbehaviour, it is evident that much more needs to be done.
