In a closely contested match between the Dallas Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors, a critical mistake by the Mavericks proved to be the difference as they lost 127-125. With playoff spots on the line, this defeat could prove costly for the Mavericks.
The mistake occurred in the third quarter when Dallas called a timeout with just two minutes left. After the timeout, Mavericks players found themselves on the wrong side of the court, allowing an easy dunk for the Warriors’ Kevon Looney. Dallas players seemed to have lost their awareness, but the referees apparently directed them to the other side of the court.
The mistake by the Mavericks was a crucial turning point in the match. Warriors’ Jordan Poole was quick to notice and made a quick inbound pass to Looney, who easily scored a two-pointer, boosting Golden State’s confidence and setting the tone for the rest of the game.
The defeat leaves Dallas with a 36-37 record, and they now sit in ninth place in the western conference. The Warriors, on the other hand, have solidified their position at sixth place, with two consecutive wins to their name.
In response to the mistake, the Dallas Mavericks are planning to submit an official protest against the NBA, arguing that the referees’ intervention was not enough to rectify the error, but one thing is certain: the Mavericks cannot afford any more slip-ups if they hope to secure a place in the playoffs.
Dallas Mavericks expected to file protest against NBA after officiating controversy
According to the Athletic’s Shams Charania, Dallas Mavericks are expected to file a protest against the NBA. The Mavericks believe that the officiating crew failed to inform them of a ruling change during a timeout in the third quarter.
Dallas team owner, Mark Cuban, took to Twitter to express his disappointment in the situation, stating that his players were not informed of the official ruling change by the referees. This lack of communication is being deemed unfair to the Mavericks.
“For those wondering about the play with 1:54 to go on the 3rd, let me explain what happened. The ref called Mavs ball. The announcer announced it. Then there was a timeout. During the time out the official changed the call and never told us,” Cuban wrote.”Then when they saw us line up as if it were our ball, he just gave the ball to the Warriors. Never said a word to us. They got an easy basketball. Crazy that it would matter in a 2 point game. Worst officiating non call mistake possibly in the history of the NBA. All they had to do was tell us and they didn’t.”
The NBA has yet to respond to the protest, but this situation highlights the importance of clear communication between officials and teams during games.
