Dwyane Wade and Gabrielle Union have been champions for their transgender daughter Zaya, but not everyone is on board with their parenting. The couple faced some nasty comments from fans as they left Madison Square Garden on Sunday night, after watching the Miami Heat beat the New York Knicks in Game 1 of the playoffs.

Wade and Union were booed by some Knicks fans who were unhappy with Wade’s allegiance to his former team. But one fan went too far by asking Wade a rude question about his daughter Zaya, who came out as a transgender girl in 2020. “Why did you mutilate your son?” the fan yelled at Wade, who ignored the remark and kept walking.

Wade told ESPN’s Rachel Nichols that he and his family moved out of Florida, where he played for the Heat for most of his career, because they didn’t feel welcome there. “That’s another reason why I don’t live in that state,” Wade said. “I have to make decisions for my family, not just personal, individual decisions.

Wade has been a supportive and loving father to Zaya, who is now 15 and a model and LGBTQ+ advocate. He has said that Zaya knew her gender identity since she was 3 years old, and that she taught him and his family about what it means to be trans. He has also stood up for her against critics who accused him of exploiting her or forcing an identity on her.

Zaya’s journey of self-expression began when she was 3 years old, according to Wade. He said that he had to check himself and learn more about the transgender community to support his daughter. “Zaya has known it for nine years,” he told Robin Roberts on Good Morning America in 2020. “She’s leading us along this journey.

In August 2022, Wade filed a petition in Los Angeles to have Zaya’s birth name and gender legally changed to female. However, his ex-wife and Zaya’s biological mother, Siohvaughn Funches-Wade, objected to the petition and claimed that Wade was trying to make money off their child’s name and gender issue. She also requested that Zaya wait until she is 18 before being able to change her name and gender.

Wade responded to his ex-wife’s allegations on Instagram, saying that no one in his house would ever force Zaya or any of their children to do anything against their will. He also accused Funches-Wade of being an absent parent to Zaya and making a mockery of his dedication to his family.

Wade and Union have been supportive of Zaya throughout her transition and have praised her for being compassionate, loving and whip smart.
