Victor Wembanyama is a phenomenon, a once-in-a-millennium talent who is poised to take over the NBA as the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft. Wembanyama, a 19-year-old French center who plays for Metropolitans 92 in his home country, has been drawing rave reviews from some of the biggest names in the game. LeBron James called him a “generational talent.”

But what makes Wembanyama even more impressive is his mindset and maturity. In a recent interview with former NBA star JJ Redick on his podcast The Old Man & the Three, Wembanyama revealed his ultimate goal in life and how he stays grounded despite all the hype and attention.

Wembanyama said that his totem is something bigger than basketball. “It’s just accomplishing yourself inside this universe,” he said. “When I need motivation, when I need energy, when I’m tired and I need to fight on the court and it’s hard, I always remember, I’m free in the universe. I do what I can. I know what I wanna do and nothing’s gonna stop me from doing it.

He also said that he knows he will never lose sight of reality or become arrogant because he is driven by his heart and not by external factors. He said that some players are very talented physically or technically but lack the mental strength to match their potential. “They get results, they get titles, they get drafted whatever you know, but truly they don’t deserve what they get,” he said.

Redick was blown away by Wembanyama’s words and praised him for his wisdom and perspective. “Jesus, he’s reached enlightenment”, Redick said.

Wembanyama arrived in the US on Monday for the first time in his life, ahead of the NBA draft that will take place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Thursday night. He is expected to be chosen by the San Antonio Spurs with the first overall pick.

On Tuesday, Wembanyama got a taste of American sports culture when he was invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch at the New York Yankees game. He wore a Joe DiMaggio No. 5 jersey and a pair of exclusive Nike x Drake sneakers as he walked onto the field at Yankee Stadium.

However, his pitch did not go as planned. He tossed the ball way outside the plate, bypassing the catcher completely. Drawing mockery from fans on Twitter.

Wembanyama will soon have a chance to redeem himself on the basketball court when he joins the NBA Summer League in July, where he will compete against other rookies and young players.
