“What a mess and embarrassment” – NBA Twitter DEMANDS an apology from Kendrick Perkins over his claim that there is ‘racial bias’ in the MVP voting
NBA fans on Twitter slam Kendrick Perkins after First Take issues an apology over his comments on racial bias in the NBA MVP voting process
Kendrick Perkins has been slammed all over social media after deleting a video where he insinuated the NBA is racially biased while deciding the league MVP. First Take apologized for Kendrick Perkins’ comments live on air to clear things up. “The panel is much more diverse than what was portrayed by Kendrick Perkins and we wanted to make sure that we corrected that,” said Molly Qerim.
Kendrick Perkins had said that 80% of the voters for the NBA league MVP award are white, which is blatant misinformation. Perkins’s statement not only damages his integrity as a journalist but the integrity of First Take overall. Fans on Twitter were demanding an apology from Perkins himself, which he has not released yet. First Take apology has been lauded by fans but the damage done in terms of racial misinformation is substantial. Here is what Twitter had to say:
Kendrick Perkins started all of this while claiming Joel Embiid should win league MVP over Nikola Jokic, but he has now taken his campaign too far. Perkins claimed that Steve Nash only won the MVP award in 2006 because he was white and that Kobe Bryant should have won it. However, Perk left out the context that the Suns had the 4th best record in the entire NBA with Nash at the center of it all. The entire NBA world has been urging Perkins to man up and apologize for his mistake.
Kendrick Perkins and JJ Redick got into a heated debate over the MVP race
Kendrick Perkins’s comments on the NBA voters being white were followed by JJ Redick putting him on the spot for creating narratives. “What we’ve just witnessed is the problem with this show. We create narratives that do not exist in reality,” said JJ Redick in response to Perkins’s comments. JJ went on to say that Perkins implied racial bias in the MVP voting and Perkins tried to deny it by saying he was just stating facts.
Kendrick Perkins was screaming on First Take saying, “It’s the facts“, while JJ Redick and Stephen A. Smith sat confused. Everyone who watched the telecast could see what Perkins meant to say and what he meant when he posted the video on Twitter. Perkins deleted the video but still tried to back up his claims on live television knowing fully well he is in the wrong.
Kendrick Perkins has had his share of bad takes on ESPN but this tops the lot as it is a blatant lie. Perkins has no data to back up his take whereas the NBA releases a list of voters every year that prove him wrong. Despite First Take apologizing on his behalf, Perkins must realize the mistake he has made and rectify it. This debate started as possible MVP candidates and has reached levels of racist accusations, something needs to be done on First Take before matters get worse.
