Just when things started to look up for the Houston Rockets, the pieces began to fall apart. One of their young core members, Kevin Porter Jr., has been arrested on domestic violence charges. He was arrested and charged with assault and strangulation after an incident at a New York hotel Monday morning, a New York City police spokesperson said.
The incident involves an incident that occurred between Porter Jr. and his girlfriend, former WNBA player Kysre Gondrezick. Police responded to a 911 call at around 6:45 a.m. from the Millenium Hotel. Apparently, Porter returned to his hotel room early Monday morning after spending the entire evening out. This upset his girlfriend, causing her to lock the door. Once Porter managed to get into the room with the help of hotel security, he assaulted Gondrezick. Porter is in custody at the NYPD’s 17th Precinct in midtown Manhattan. Porter is currently coming off his best season as a star for the Rockets, averaging 19.2 points per game, 5.3 rebounds, and 5.7 assists.
According to the NYPD, “Upon arrival officers were informed that a 26-year-old female sustained a laceration to the right side of her face and was complaining about pain to her neck,” the spokesperson said. “A preliminary investigation on scene determined that a known individual struck her multiple times upon her body and placed his hands around the neck.” Gondrezick, Porter’s girlfriend, herself is a professional basketball player who played college ball in Michigan and West Virginia. She was selected 4th overall in the 2021 draft by Indiana and played only one season before being waived. She has currently been out of the league for two seasons and remains a free agent.
Porter has been charged with assault and strangulation. This isn’t his first encounter with the law either. Porter was arrested on weapon charges in 2020 when he was in Ohio. He was let free, as the grand jury declined to indict him.
