In an interview with HoopsHype, Brendan Haywood, a former teammate of Jordan’s during his tenure with the Washington Wizards (2001-2003), shared insights into Jordan’s commitment as he neared 40.
Despite the challenges of wearing dual hats as both an executive and a player, Jordan’s spirit remained unstoppable. As Haywood recalled, “MJ would be there at 8 am even when practice didn’t start until 11 am.”
Jordan’s commitment to discipline was unmatched. One day, despite it being an optional day for veterans, Haywood found Jordan in the gym, much ahead of him. When questioned about his early arrival, Jordan said, “The better question is why did I beat you here?”
Michael Jordan – The mentor behind the legend
Jordan and Haywood were more than just teammates to each other. It was a relationship between a teacher and a student. Jordan, during his tenure with the Wizards, frequently wore the mentorship hat, passing on invaluable knowledge to the younger players.
Speaking about his dynamics with Jordan, Haywood stated, “Our relationship was more like a teacher and a pupil. He was teaching at all times and I was just trying to take it all in.”
