Marcus Smart and Justice Brooks

Justice Brooks, a 19-year-old Atlanta kid, is thrilled as he watches the Atlanta Hawks get ready to meet the Boston Celtics at State Farm Arena. Brooks was wearing a Celtics shirt with Marcus Smart’s name on this particular night, despite the fact that he was clearly overjoyed at the opportunity to watch his hometown club up close.

Marcus Smart, the star for the Celtics who extended the invitation to Justice, was on the jersey that Justice wore. On this particular evening in Atlanta, the 6-foot-3 guard interrupted his normal warmup to lead Justice through security and enable the kid to join him on the court. Before the game began, as fans were still arriving and players making their way to the court, Justice, and Smart took some time to sit courtside, talk about basketball, laugh, and give each other high-fives.

After getting on-board with Be The Match, a donor registry platform where people may donate blood and possibly save the life of someone fighting life-threatening blood malignancies or blood illnesses like sickle cell, Smart and Justice first crossed paths earlier this year.

Speaking on how they met, Justice said, “I met Marcus through Be The Match. And we flew out to Boston, me and my mom. And we met him at his house, we did a big media day. There was Boston news there and different news outlets and we did different interviews together. Before we did any interviews, Marcus came down to meet me.”

In September, “Be The Match” informed Smart of Justice’s battle with sickle cell anemia. The Boston Celtics player then invited the young man to his Massachusetts house. The two hoopers connected right away as they got together to talk about basketball and other shared interests.

Marcus Smart now wants to assist the boy in finding a donor that fits his blood type because of their newfound connection. Sadly, Justice Brooks has little hope of finding a compatible donor. A Black patient’s likelihood of obtaining a matching donor is only 29%, whereas a white person’s chance is 79%, according to Be The Match. Brooks feels positive about his status despite the odds.

The Celtics star commenting on Brooks’ condition said, “He never allows his situation or what he’s going through to affect how he comes out to the world.” Smart added: “He’s always gonna be him, a loving person and smiling all the time and he really cares. He has every right to be down. But yet, he chooses to be up “
