“Who the f*ck is Nick Wright?” NBA Fans condemn analyst for disrespecting Michael Jordan on GOAT list
Nick Wright on Michael Jordan
When it comes to NBA, the Greatest of All Time Player ‘debate-tally’ generally starts with Chicago Bulls Icon Michael Jordan. Fans are nearly accustomed to the same, but to their surprise, Fox Sports analyst Nick Wright puts his at the 3rd position. While he has not given any explanation for his rankings, fans criticised the 37-year-old analyst for an “invalid” list. People often debate about what order NBA legends should be ranked in. But still, the list from Nick Wright disappointed many fans.
Nick Wright has recently shared his Top 50 NBA players of the last five decades list on Twitter. He put Michael Jordan at No. 3. As a result of which, lots of fans were unhappy with that positioning, as Michael Jordan is near-unanimously viewed as the GOAT. More importantly, the two players that will most likely complete Nick Wright’s are LeBron James and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
While there’s no question that they can be considered the GOATs of their generation, with MJ already setting the standards high with his game. Even any particular fan would put “His Airness” lowest at 2nd position behind his preferred great player, so Nick’s choice of allocating MJ 3rd position is viewed as huge disrespect to Jordan’s greatness.
Why Michael Jordan is mostly considered a GOAT?
There were many star players living up to the hype, and delivering the best for their game in the league. Many did it with multiple teams, while some did it with one franchise only. There is no doubt that a lot of NBA legends have comparable resumes. The gap between them is very slender, and often, trying to distinguish between legends is like splitting hairs. With that being said, there has to be only one Greatest of All Time basketball, if we view it as “The GOAT”.
People have their theories for that position and come up with their choices of GOAT. But if all the parameters are considered, old and new ones, there would be only one player – at least in the top 5 lists in those parameters. And that player is none other than Michael Jordan.
MJ won 6 NBA titles in 6 Finals appearances. Also, he was Finals MVP in all of those 6 Championship runs, showcasing his dominance on the floor. But it is not only about winning for Michael. Individually he performed far better than any of the NBA legends on Nick’s list. He remained the top scorer in the league for 10 different seasons. Jordan also holds the record of averaging 30+ points in regular season games.
In Addition, he won 5 regular season MVP awards and was in 9 defensive 1st team selections – the records hard to beat. It emphasizes his defensive fairness, making him the best two-way player in the discussion.
While some analysts would suggest that there has to be a position-wise ranking, where we will have 5 different GOATs, NBA Legend Rick Barry also said, “Why does everybody want to talk about the GOAT?… Everybody talks about the GOAT. You cannot, in team sports, pick the greatest player of all time. It has to be by position.”
But it would also be unfair to the dominance MJ hold over his counterparts, just like Nick’s ranking. Here is how fans react to Nick’s list,
