Why does Luka Doncic wear No. 77? Know about all the reasons behind it

Luka Doncic

Luka Doncic has established himself as one of the best young players in the NBA, if not the best. He is on the verge of becoming the face of the league in the next few years. The Dallas Mavericks star has already taken NBA and fans by storm with his masterful performances this season. What Luka does at this age, conventionally, NBA players learn after they have become veterans in the league. But why does he wear number 77 on his jersey?

Doncic wears the number 77 in honor of Greek professional basketball player Vassilis Spanoulis. Spanoulis wore the No. 7 throughout his basketball career. When he was little, Luka enjoyed watching Spanoulis play. However, Kleman Prepelic of the Slovenian national team had already taken the No. 7 shirt that Vassilis had worn for his whole career.

Being somewhat inexperienced at the time, Luka would never have had the power to rob Prepelic of the shirt. So, he improvised, and added an extra seven to get to the 77. “That’s why I wear No 7. I mean, I couldn’t wear No. 7, cause it was already taken, so I took 77. He was really, really big time for me,” Luka said. Even when he was drafted by the Dallas Mavericks, number 7 was already taken by Dwight Powell. So, Doncic again took number 77 for the franchise.

Per EuroHoops, the Dallas Mavericks superstar revealed his decision to wear the No. 77 jersey after a game against Angola in 2021. “Spanoulis was my idol since I was little. I was watching him. It was kind of sad seeing him retiring. That’s why I wear No 7. I mean, I couldn’t wear No 7, cause it was already taken, so I took 77. He was really, really big time for me,” said Luka Doncic.
