Muhammad Ali and Wilt Chamberlain are two of the greatest figures in each of their respective sport. Muhammad Ali is considered to be the greatest boxer of all time, he was a gold medallist and the first fighter to hold the world championship three times, while Wilt Chamberlain’s 100-point game is a feat that no player has ever come close to or will likely break.
In 1961, Dean Martin conducted the roast of Muhammad Ali where Chamberlain had some words for the Heavy-weight boxer. Both massive trash talkers, the NBA legend calls out Ali for having a physical cap, that is, Ali was born a girl! Ali would not take this sitting down and showcased his authority too. The two professionals are seen in an intense staring battle with neither backing down.
A fight that almost happened between two legends
In 1967 on a talk show, there was a discussion over a potential fight between the two, but Ali had refused to sign a deal because he wanted to fight more boxers first. In 1971, there was again the possibility of the two together in a ring, with Chamberlain retired from basketball with accolades that were unmatched and 29-year-old Muhammad Ali in his prime. The fight fell through again after a meeting before the press conference.
The fight between the two could not take place as the money that was involved was just not enough for Wilt Chamberlain to be interested, while it is indicative that Ali seemed eager for a fight. While this did not transpire and remains to be a what could have been scenario, a meeting between the two in a squared circle would have been the show of a lifetime.
