Former NBA player and ESPN analyst Jalen Rose came out on Twitter and blasted the Hall of Fame coach Phil Jackson for saying that he stopped watching the NBA because it turned “too political” and catered to a certain audience.

Jackson made the controversial comments in a podcast interview with music producer Rick Rubin. The former Bulls coach said he did not enjoy the games in the Orlando bubble during the 2019-20 season when the NBA resumed play amid the COVID-19 pandemic and the social unrest following the killing of George Floyd. The NBA allowed players and teams to express their support for the Black Lives Matter movement and other causes by wearing slogans on their jerseys, such as “Justice”, and “Equality”, and by kneeling during the national anthem. Moreover, the league painted the motto on the courts.

Jackson’s remarks drew criticism from former players, media members, and fans, who accused him of being tone-deaf, insensitive, and racist. Jalen Rose, who played under Jackson for one season with the New York Knicks in 2006-07, slammed his former coach on his Twitter account.

You can’t make this up, Hall of Fame coach and 11-time champion Phil Jackson claims to have stopped supporting the NBA because it became ‘too political’ when it went into the bubble and was catering to certain audiences by putting slogans on the back of the jerseys and Black Lives Matter on the floor,” Rose said.

Rose goes on to add, “The same Phil Jackson that won championships with some of the greatest black athletes in the history of the game: Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant. Made millions on their backs and of their sweat annually. You are sitting there watching the game with your grandkids and you’ll think it’s funny when Justice passes the ball to Equal Opportunity. Well somebody showed you who they are. LEAVE. So stop watching FOREVER.

Rose was not alone in his condemnation of Jackson. Scottie Pippen, who won six titles with Jackson and Jordan in Chicago, also called him racist in a recent episode of The Dan Patrick Show.

Jackson’s racist tendencies were recently exposed by one of his former players, Scottie Pippen, who accused him of making a “racial move” in a 1994 playoff game against the New York Knicks. Pippen told Dan Patrick that Jackson’s choice to give Toni Kukoc the final shot instead of him was motivated by his bias against black players and coaches. Pippen reiterated that he had no problem calling Jackson a racist and questioned his loyalty and integrity.

Many fans and media members also pointed out that Jackson himself had been involved in politics as a player when he supported Native American rights and opposed the Vietnam War. They questioned how Jackson could ignore the impact of racism and police brutality on his former players and colleagues, especially after Bryant’s tragic death in a helicopter crash in 2020.

Jackson’s racist remarks have repeatedly shown his lack of respect and sensitivity for black players and coaches in the NBA. He failed to take responsibility in such matters or the very least apologize for his offensive comments, instead claiming they were jokes or personal views.
