The New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson’s reported bad eating habits and injury concerns have finally caught up with him. The final three years of his contract, which could total up to $127 million, are no longer fully guaranteed after he didn’t meet the minimum game requirements and weight clauses in the 2022–2023 season. On Gil’s Arena podcast, retired NBA player Gilbert Arenas discussed the circumstances and began by posing a query to the Pelicans star.
Zion’s problems have already created a negative precedent, Arenas continued. Any team will add the weight clauses in his contract or sponsor trying to sign him. Arenas said that he would have guards stationed outside Zion’s door to ensure no food was being brought inside.

Gilbert Arenas said:
I’m going to spend an extra million dollars on security to protect my money. Same thing I was saying with Ja. I’mma spending an extra million dollars. I got your security. I have your security. In the hotel, I can put a security by his door, there's no food coming in this motherf*****.Gilbert Arena on his podcast
In addition, he disclosed that he had heard the Jordan brand employed a chef and personal trainer to make sure the Pelicans star maintained his figure. Arenas recommended that to safeguard their investment, the team should take this extreme measure. The young star finds his proposal to the Pelicans to try to stop Zion from overindulging himself somewhat embarrassing.
Zion Williamson’s future with the Pelicans is not guaranteed
Zion Williamson inked a five-year max contract extension with the New Orleans Pelicans that could be worth up to $231 million in 2022. Zion’s contract was intended to keep him with the Pelicans through the 2027–2028 campaign. Nevertheless, Zion did not fulfil the terms of the agreement, and the Pelicans inserted a clause in the contract that would have ensured those final three years based on Williamson’s games played.

After appearing in just 29 games the previous season. Zion Williamson has reportedly caused a clause in his contract, per Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic. His contract will no longer be guaranteed beginning in 2025–2026. Therefore, the New Orleans Pelicans will be free to waive Zion following the 2024–2025 season without incurring any fees.
Zion’s relationship with the Pelicans won’t end unless necessary. The Pelicans value Zion as a player. And they want to see him stay healthy and play for a long time. According to reports, Zion’s contract calls for regular weigh-ins and body fat percentages. However, it’s not apparent if the Pelicans have up until now enforced these demands on Zion.
