Zion Williamson has recently come under increasing criticism for his fitness. NBA Hall of Famers Shaquille O’Neal and Charles Barkley addressed his fitness issues during the NBA In-Season Tournament Finals.

Stephen A. Smith of First Take on ESPN also addressed Williamson’s fitness and focus during the week’s first show. Smith went on to mention what people were talking behind the back of Williamson regarding his eating habits. After yesterday’s New Orleans Pelicans vs Minnesota Timberwolves match, Williamson was asked about his response to the comments made by Barkley and O’Neal. To which his reply was that;

If it comes from a place where they want to see me do better, thank you, if not, everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Smith responded with another take on his show. He made it clear that it was him, not Barkley and O’Neal who mentioned the comments about Williamson’s eating habits.

Stephen A. Smith said in this morning’s First Take on ESPN that it was him who Zion Williamson should be talking about the fitness comments. Smith went on to say that he had a phone call from Williamson’s stepfather. They had a frank conversation about what Smith said before on his show. Smith reiterated that he is the one who talked about Williamson’s fitness and eating habits. He said:

I said that Zion Williamson was fat. I meant it.

Smith says, having great talent is not enough if the fitness and conditioning are not great. It is in Williamson’s best interest that Smith and others are talking about his low fitness levels. Smith reiterated to Williamson’s stepfather that they all want him to succeed at the highest level. Williamson has to do better for himself and his New Orleans Pelicans.

Zion Williamson needs to take charge of his career

Zion Williamson entering the 2019 Draft was touted as the next face of the NBA. But the lofty expectations have been damped down due to injuries and an overall reduced impact. Most analysts and fans believe WIliamson is better than the career 22.9 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4.7 assists he is putting up this season.

During his first two seasons, Zion Williamson averaged 25.8 points, 7 rebounds and 3.6 assists. According to many, Williamson is capable of averaging much more and dominating the league due to his elite skills. They feel his fitness and focus are what is holding him back.

Whatever Stephen A. Smith, Shaquille O’Neal, and Charles Barkley think, it is up to Williamson to take charge of his career. According to all of them, Williamson can be the best player in the league.
