The NBA has one of the most tightly packed regular-season game schedules across the top-tier leagues in American sports. However, Election Day in the U.S. is an exception, where even the NBA does not host any games.
November 7, 2023, will be Election Day across the United States, and it is one of those few occasions when basketball does not roll on the NBA courts. This is an initiative taken by the league to promote civic engagement and voting among fans.
As NBA professionals and enthusiasts of the sport are given a day’s break from the tightly packed regular season schedule, it is indeed to inspire all the fans to go ahead and vote on Election Day in their communities. But exactly which matchups will follow this one-day break in the regular season? Here’s what you need to know about the election day break and exactly when the regular season will resume.
Why are there no NBA games on Election Day in the US?
The NBA will not host any games on November 7, 2023, as originally indicated in their 2023–24 schedule announcement. The league had taken a similar initiative in 2022 during the season prior, and it seems this will continue to be put into practice in the coming seasons as well.

As per the NBA statement released earlier this year in August:
The league will continue to encourage fans and the broader NBA community to make a plan to vote and participate in the civic process. As part of this initiative, the NBA will share important resources from voting organizations and highlight the civic engagement work of teams in their markets.
When will the regular season start again?
The Election Daybreak will only restrict regular season games for one day on November 7, 2023. The NBA fixtures will resume right the day after, on November 8, 2023, with the first three fixtures featuring the Washington Wizards vs. the Charlotte Hornets, the Boston Celtics vs. the Philadelphia 76ers, and the Utah Jazz vs. the Indiana Pacers.

Almost all the top-tier professional leagues in the US do not host any games on Election Day, bar the NHL. However, college sports will commence as per schedule without any special regard for the occasion.
