Nobody from planet earth could defeat Michael Jordan that year”: Legendary Coach George Karl dismisses Stephen Curry’s claims of beating 1996 Bulls
George Karl on Stephen Curry's claims
Stephen Curry was recently on the popular YouTube show Actually Me by GQ Sports. The guests on the show have to answer some of the most asked fan questions. What Steph got as a question was one of the most debatable questions of all time – Who would win a 7-game Finals series between super-team Golden State Warriors and 96′ Chicago Bulls.
Curry replied that the Warriors with Kevin Durant can beat the 96′ Bulls in six games. He said – “Absolutely. Obviously, we’ll never know, but you put us on paper with them, I like our chances. I’d say Dubs [Warriors] in six too.“

The Golden State Warriors in 2015-16 had the best NBA season any team can have. They went 73-9 in the regular season, losing just three games on the way to the NBA Finals. They, however, lost the NBA Finals 3-4, even after being up 3-1 in the series against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Warriors added Kevin Durant the very next season to their team after which they became unstoppable. They then went on to win two consecutive championships.
The Chicago Bulls in 1995-96 had the best team performance in the regular season before the Warriors in 2016. In the 1995-96 season, the Bulls finished the regular season with a 72-10 record. The Bulls lost just one game in the Playoffs on their way to the NBA Finals. They, however, ended up winning the Championship (unlike Warriors) defeating the Seattle Supersonics 4-2.

George Karl disagrees with Stephen Curry
George Karl begged to differ on Stephen Curry’s claim of beating the 96′ Bulls. George Karl is a legendary NBA coach who has coached Sacramento Kings, Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets, and Seattle Supersonics. Karl is also one of the only nine coaches in the NBA to have 1,000 career wins. He is 1175-824 in his career.
George Karl was the then-coach of the Seattle Supersonics, who lost to the Bulls in the NBA Finals in 1996. Karl tweeted – “Nobody from planet Earth was beating Michael [Jordan] that year.”
For someone who saw the 96′ Bulls up close and personal and came up short in beating them, his opinion holds a lot of weight. But the Golden State Warriors with Kevin Durant was no doubt one of the best-assembled teams ever. Unfortunately, no one will ever know the result of that face-off.
