Phoenix Mercury’s Brittney Griner arrested by Russian Police in drug investigation

The NBA and WNBA superstars are often speculated around a lot of controversy and this season in particular, the surge in controversial scenarios have been on a rise. The latest to add to it, is Phoenix Mercury’s marquee Brittney Griner as news broke that she has been arrested by the Russian Police Department over drug charges.
As per the statement released by the police department, the athlete who has been arrested over drug charges has won two Olympic gold medals with United States but did not disclose the name. Moreover, it was reported that the police found vape cartridges containing hashish oil in Brittney Griner’s luggage at Sheremetyevo Airport near Moscow.

WNBA Star Brittney Griner gets arrested by Russian Police
According to the reports published by New York Times, “The Russian news agency TASS, citing a law enforcement source, identified the player as Brittney Griner, a seven-time W.N.B.A. All-Star center for the Phoenix Mercury. Griner won gold medals with the U.S. women’s national basketball team in 2021 and 2016.”
“The Customs Service released a video of a traveler at the airport that appeared to be the 31-year-old Griner, wearing a mask and black sweatshirt, going through security. The video showed an individual removing a package from the traveler’s bag.”
“According to the statement, a criminal case has been opened into the large-scale transportation of drugs, which can carry a sentence of up to 10 years behind bars in Russia. The basketball player was taken into custody while the investigation is ongoing,” the officials said.
Griner is a center for the Phoenix Mercury and is very well known all around the Women Basketball circuit for her strength and durability around the rim.
After this news broke out Mercury made sure that they come in direct touch with Brittney Griner and her family and friends, maintaining serious concerns about her safety, physical and mental health.
“We remain in constant contact with her family, her representation, the WNBA and NBA. We love and support Brittney and at this time our main concern is her safety, physical and mental health, and her safe return home.”
