Since joining the NBA, Ja Morant has been an on-court highlight reel, saturating social media with incredible physical prowess. Over the past five seasons, the Memphis Grizzlies guard has made himself and the team must-watch TV, whether it’s through his mind-bending layups, acrobatic blocks, or his ever-increasing collection of poster dunks.

However, Morant recently made a shocking revelation regarding his ‘dunks.’ To prolong his NBA career, the two-time All-Star said he will be spending less time above the rim in the future. Morant also claimed that the ‘referees in the NBA’ are one of the reasons he has chosen to stop dunking.

I’m not trying to dunk at all. Y’all think I’m lying. I’m dead serious…Sometimes, I get knocked out the air and (a foul) don’t get called, and now I’m out longer than what I’m supposed to be. Sometimes, the foul might get called; I still hit the floor, but after the game you might feel that little fall. So, I just pick and choose, man. Hey, two points is two points. I get it done. That’s all that matters.

Morant’s athleticism is still evident. He has had more electrifying dunks than almost anyone since being selected in the 2019 NBA Draft. The Grizzlies guard, however, has stated that he no longer wants to dunk since the way other players challenge him puts him in danger. However, this decision sent shockwaves around the NBA community.

After only making nine appearances due to injury and suspension last season, Morant has participated in 12 of the Grizzlies’ 22 games this season. Although he has shown promise in his time on the court this season, his reluctance makes sense given his recent past.

Ja Morant has captivated the basketball world with his incredible dunks and finishes. This has made him the NBA’s favorite. As it is, though, he paid a heavy price for all of this. Several injuries have hampered both his and the Grizzlies’ prospects of contending over the years. Regarding this, Morant decided lately that we will ‘not dunk.’ This decision was supported by former NBA champion, Kendrick Perkins.

You know what’s that called, Malika? That’s called growth, “We’re starting to see Ja Morant get the big picture right. His team needs him on the floor and although we all want to see him with highlights and those special moments that he’s blessed us with in the past, it’s more valuable for us to see him play these games.

The NBA analyst believes that even though everyone considers Morant to be one of the most entertaining players in the world. That said, the Grizzlies star still needs to focus on doing amazing things.
