The Lakers have a new weapon in their arsenal: Rui Hachimura. The 25-year-old forward from Japan joined the team in a trade with the Wizards earlier this season and has been making an impact ever since. Hachimura grew up playing baseball but switched to basketball in high school, where he dominated the competition and won three national championships.
Hachimura then moved to the U.S. to play for Gonzaga, where he became one of the best players in the country and earned several awards and honors. He made history as the first Japanese player to be drafted in the first round of the NBA draft in 2019 when the Wizards picked him ninth overall. He impressed as a rookie, earning a spot on the All-Rookie Second Team.
But he wanted more. He wanted to play for a contender. He got his wish when he was traded to the Lakers, where he now shares the court with LeBron James and Anthony Davis. The Japanese player, also represented Japan at the Olympics in his home country, where he was a fan favorite and a leader for his team. Hachimura is not just a basketball player. He is a cultural icon and a role model for millions of people in Japan and around the world.

Current Contract Breakdown
The Lakers acquired Rui Hachimura from the Wizards in a trade that sent Kendrick Nunn and three second-rounders to Washington. Hachimura is on the final year of his rookie deal, which pays him $6.26 million this season.
The Lakers have his Bird rights, meaning they can go over the cap to re-sign him in 2023. But he will be a restricted free agent, so other teams can make him an offer that the Lakers have to match or lose him. Until he signs a new contract, he has a cap hold of $18.8 million that counts against the Lakers’ cap space for next season. The Lakers can either keep the cap hold and try to re-sign him, or renounce it and let him walk.
