During his NBA career spanning from 2001 to 2012, Gilbert Arenas raked in an impressive fortune, estimated at around $163 million by Spotrac. Across this period, he dazzled audiences while representing four different NBA teams with his exceptional talent and skills.
Undoubtedly, Arenas exerted himself to the fullest and reaped significant rewards for his endeavors. Despite his ability to indulge in lavish spending, Arenas recognized the importance of allocating a portion of his earnings to support his family. With ex-girlfriend Laura Govan, Arenas shares four children, a story that has garnered considerable attention. Despite their parental bond, Arenas and Govan never formalized their relationship through marriage. However, Govan asserts they lived as a married couple, citing court documents filed by the actress via TMZ, where Arenas purportedly promised to equitably share all earnings from 2003 onwards.
Their arrangement took a downturn in 2014 when Arenas reportedly ejected Govan from their residence, making it clear she was not welcome. From that point, their situation spiraled out of control, leading to legal disputes, particularly regarding child support payments demanded from Arenas. In a conversation on VLAD TV, Arenas, the 31st overall pick in the 2001 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors, seemed unfazed by divulging details of his personal life.
Initially, Arenas began providing $20,000 a month in child support. However, he later increased this to $35,000, along with other forms of assistance. Yet, upon realizing the extent of Arenas’ financial capabilities, Govan purportedly attempted to leverage the situation to extract further funds from the NBA player. Gilbert stated,
I bumped it up to $35K and then I paid for school on top of that which made it $44K. I was originally at $20K, and I went up to $44K. A month later, she fouled again. She figured that at 44 from him, she could tell the judge she needed more.
Nevertheless, the judge presiding over their case remained steadfast in adhering to legal protocols. Despite Govan’s persistent appeals, the judge cautioned that the financial support she was receiving could significantly decrease in the future. Arena added,
The judge was like, you know that I have to go by what's on paper. So if you are going to keep coming here, I will have to drop it down to the real number. Eventually, the judge went from $44k to $7,100.
Recently, Arenas disclosed that he isn’t as wealthy as many assume, and it appears his statement is valid.
Gilbert Arenas reminisces about Ginuwine landing a punch on an NBA player while at the club
During a recent episode of “Gil’s Arena,” Gilbert Arenas shared a fascinating anecdote from his time at a club in Washington, D.C. He recounted witnessing R&B artist Ginuwine deliver a two-punch combo to an NBA player’s face. The altercation stemmed from an incident where Ginuwine attempted to send a bottle to another NBA player, who perceived it as a sign of disrespect and returned it. This rejection led to a confrontation between Ginuwine and the player, resulting in a physical altercation, as described by Arenas.
Recalling the incident, he said:
I did see an NBA player get two pieced by Ginuwine in the club. Ginuwine was giving bottles out, respect, he would send a bottle over to him he would say, 'It's on me.' Right, so they give it to the dude, and Ginuwine was like [raises hand] right. The dude was like, 'I ain't gay, I'm not accepting no bottle from no man, send that shit back.
He further added,
So, you know the girl went over there, told Ginuwine what he said. I'm like, 'You didn't have to say he said the same thing,' right? So Ginuwine came over there, said some things, and then all of a sudden, wop, wop, wop. Like, 'Oh shit, he been practicing for this thing.' You can't get hit by ponies. No, he gave you 'In Those Jeans' hands.
Undoubtedly, there’s probably a backstory leading up to the fists flying. However, only the unnamed player and Ginuwine hold the full account of events unless they choose to share it with the world. As a result, fans may have to accept their ignorance regarding the details of the incident.
