The Oscars are always known to produce some or the other controversy which has left fans all over the world in hysterics or anguish. During the latest award night ceremony, the responsibility was taken by ‘Best Actor’ Will Smith who went onto smack the life out of Chris Rock for using his wife’s bald head reference in G.I.Joe 2. With many players in the NBA supporting Smith, Kareem Abdul Jabbar has come out to heavily criticize the culprit for the same.

While stars like Damian Lillard decided to vouch for Will Smith standing up for his wife, against a tasteless joke made by Chris Rock, Kareem Abdul Jabbar feels the opposite. The NBA Legend suggests that the particular instance was not only a slap on the face of Rock, but on the faces of all men, women, entertainment industry and the black community.

Now to those who are not aware of the instance, the controversial incident occurred after Chris Rock made a joke about Pinkett Smith’s hair, saying “can’t wait for G.I. Jane 2.” For context, Pinkett Smith revealed that she shaved her head due to suffering from alopecia, which results in hair loss. Will Smith was first seen laughing at the joke. But then, the veteran actor stepped onto the stage to strike Rock in the face. Leaving everyone watching from the audience and on the TV sets, shell shocked.

Now, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar decided to comment on the massive and raw controversy of Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith, and Chris Rock. And let us just say, his thoughts are something you’re going to want to know, by all means.

Kareem Abdul Jabbar said as quoted by Kareem.Substack.com, “(Will) Smith’s slap was also a slap to women. If Rock had physically attacked Pinkett Smith, Smith’s intervention would have been welcome. Or if he’d remained in his seat and yelled his post-slap threat, that would have been unnecessary, but understandable. But by hitting Rock, he announced that his wife was incapable of defending herself—against words. From everything I’d seen of Pinkett Smith over the years, she’s a very capable, tough, smart woman who can single-handedly take on a lame joke at the Academy Awards show.”

If we are being honest here, we cannot help but agree with the NBA Hall of Famer and legend, Abdul-Jabbar on this one.

Yes, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith were justified in feeling the anger they did. But, not only could the couple have simply shouted back with verbal messages of their own, but the latter is also strong enough to defend herself. Given that jokes are beyond all limits, on several occasions, but slapping one with such venom on National and Global Television, was surely going way beyond imagination and integrity.
