Drafted in 1997 by the San Antonio Spurs, Duncan stole center stage in his very first season and was named Rookie of the Year in 1998. Frontrunner of the Big Three, one of the most decorated trios in NBA history, Duncan was the ultimate team player. Loved and revered by all his ex-teammates, the Big Fundamental is considered one of the greatest players of all time.

Tim Duncan has won five Championship rings with the San Antonio Spurs during his time in the NBA. Duncan had won the first ever title in their franchise history for the Spurs in his second NBA season. Out of the five titles the San Antonio Spurs have won in their franchise history, Duncan had played an integral role in every single one of them – winning Finals MVP in three of the title campaigns.

What years did Tim Duncan win his rings?

Tim Duncan won his five rings in 1999, 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2014. He won the first Championship in Spurs’ history vs the New York Knicks in the 1999 Finals. He then won three championships in the 20’s decade and his last NBA ring in 2014. Duncan is the second player after John Salley to have won the title in three different decades.

1999: First Championship in Franchise History

Tim Duncan was named Rookie of the Year in 1998 for his spectacular on-court performances. It was the very following season that Duncan and Spurs went on to beat the New York Knicks 4-1 in five games in the 1999 NBA finals. Partnering with David Robinson, the duo was hailed the “Twin Towers”, and their defensive prowess left the Nicks futile. Duncan was named Finals MVP, averaging 27.4 points, 14.0 rebounds and 2.4 assists in the Finals series. 

2003: Second Championship, Second Finals MVP

After a successful playoff run, the Spurs made it to the 2003 Finals where they faced the New Jersey Nets. In a six-game series, the Spurs beat the Nets 4-2 to lift their second title in franchise history. Duncan put up a stellar display including a spectacular quadruple-double in the last game, leading his team to victory. He was once again named Finals MVP, averaging 24.2 points, 17.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists in the Finals series. 

2005: Third Ring, Third Finals MVP

In the 2004-05 season, the Spurs faced the Detroit Pistons in the NBA Finals. In a Finals series that went on to seven games, it was Duncan’s brilliance that saw the Spurs clinch the title 4-3. With the series tied 3-3 after the sixth game, Tim Duncan scored 25 points and 11 rebounds to hand his team the title. 

Ben Wallace who played for the Pistons aptly remarked, “Duncan put his team on his shoulders and carried them to the Championship. That’s what great players do.” Having averaged 20.6 points, 14.1 rebounds and 2.1 assists, Duncan was named the Finals MVP for the third time.

2007: Fourth Championship

Tim Duncan often remarked that his fourth championship had been the best of his NBA career. Playing against the Cleveland Cavaliers, San Antonio Spurs lifted their fourth historic title in the 2007 Finals. In just four games the Spurs demolished the Cavaliers 4-0, where the entire team set their best foot forward. Duncan averaged 18.3 points, 11.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists in the Finals and played an integral role on their road to victory. 

2014: Title in Three Decades

Duncan lifted his fifth and final title with the San Antonio Spurs in 2014 against the Miami Heat. That season ‘The Big Three’, consisting of Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker, broke the record for most NBA playoff wins. In the five-game finals series, the Spurs beat Miami Heat 4-1 to win their fifth Championship. Duncan averaged 15.4 points, 10.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists as he won his fifth NBA ring.
