On Wednesday, the Chicago Bulls’ security team escorted DeMar DeRozan’s daughter, Diar, out of Scotiabank Arena. Diar, who is nine years old, was led to the team bus with her father after the NBA informed the team of severe online threats directed toward the Bulls star’s daughter.
It is not clear who made the threats against Diar or what their motives were. However, the NBA took the threats seriously and ensured her safety. The Bulls organization also issued a statement condemning the threats and calling for an end to online harassment.
This comes after Diar DeRozan seemingly played a pivotal role in the Bulls’ game against the Raptors. Every time the Raptors took a free throw, Diar screamed, potentially distracting the players. This led to the Raptors missing 50% of their free throws, far below the 78% they managed during the regular season. Raptors fans weren’t best pleased by her behavior throughout the game, though she cannot be blamed for their disappointing loss to the Bulls at home. Some fans reportedly went too far with their criticism on social media, with reports claiming they were “severe” threats directed at the 9-year-old.
DeRozan addressed the issue in a post-game chat with NBA on TNT, saying, “As long as she was there with her father, I wasn’t worried about anything happening. It was just a precautionary measure and I appreciate that.” While the Bulls star may not have been worried about his daughter’s safety at that moment, the threats against her are still deeply concerning and should not be taken lightly.

Diar DeRozan was screaming before each of the Raptors’ free throws, seemingly to disrupt the players. Her actions appeared to have been successful, as evidenced by the Raptors’ 18 missed free throws. These included two crucial misses by Pascal Siakam when the team was trailing by two points with less than 20 seconds remaining in the game. These missed opportunities may have contributed to the Raptors losing the game and ending their season.
Though, any of this was not an excuse for the Raptors’ fans to harass and threaten a 9-year-old girl, or anyone. Raptors fans took it too far and hopefully, they’re met with repercussions for the same. NBA Fans across the world slammed Raptors fans for their behavior on Twitter.
