The NBA has seen changes over the years, some considerate, some radical, but all to develop the league’s global appeal. However, one thing that hasn’t changed so much has been the league’s draft process which led controversial former player Gilbert Arenas to lend his voice on its change.
Gilbert Arenas on a recent episode of his podcast, Gil’s Arena proposed that the current draft should be scrapped to allow prospects to pick the team that gets to draft them. In essence, the players should have more control over the start of their professional careers.
They should test the theory out. You have the draft so we know who’s picking. Whoever is considered mock draft at number 1, number 2, you ask him ‘what team you want?’Gilbert Arena said
However radical this might sound coming from one as controversial as Agent Zero, it puts the players first and foremost as it has been seen that previously drafted players were not able to develop due to going to the wrong team. As for the current draft system, players are assigned to teams based on their draft position, which leaves them with little control over where they kick off their professional careers.
Agent Zero has been vocal about this season’s draft, especially when he is talking about Los Angeles’ second-round draft pick, Bronny James. This season’s NBA Draft didn’t get the hype like last year’s and notwithstanding fans will be hyped up to know who will join the league of Rookie of the Year.
Gilbert Arenas predicts Luka Doncic as next season’s MVP
Luka Doncic has been one of the most dominant players in the league in recent seasons, as he came in with a reputation while plying his trade overseas in Europe. His status as one of the league’s best has prompted Gilbert Arenas to make a very bold prediction concerning him when the end-of-the-season award ceremony comes around.
Agent Zero on an episode of his podcast, asserted that the Dallas Mavericks star guard will clinch the league’s MVP award. He also added that he would achieve it in style as he’d earn a triple-double in the process.
I'd be surprised if he don't average a triple-double… He will probably be the number one candidate for MVP. He's going to do something that hasn't been done in a few years, and that's average a triple-double.Gilbert Arenas said
The race for the 2024 NBA MVP has reigning MVP, Nikola Jokic as the bookmakers’ favorites with Arenas’ pick closely following behind. The reigning scoring champion will have to do more in the upcoming season to justify his selection as the league’s best player.
