On another regular day, a retired police officer Mr. Curtis Reeves was accompanied by his wife for a new release in the box office named “Lone Survivor.” Seated in front of the old couple were Chad and Nicole Oulson who certainly not expecting to walk back home without each other. According to sources of the Associated Press, Mr. Oulson had reached out for his phone to contact his daughter’s day care.

Mr. Reeves was seemingly very disturbed by the phone and urged Chad to keep it aside. The retire cop had approached the theater’s management to lodge a complaint against Mr. Oulson. By the time Curtis had returned the soon to be victim had already done as requested. The two men had exchanged words and the quarrel has taken a bad turn to where Reeves felt that his wife was being threatened. According to Reeves, he “acted out of defense” when he reached out for his weapon and shot Chad Oulson.

On Friday, 25th February 2022, Mr. Curtis Reeves who shot Chad Oulson was found not guilty after being for second degree murder and battery of Nicole Oulson, the wife of the victim. This case garnered a lot of attention as it also had ties to the Stand Your Ground law passed in Florida at that time. Mr. Reeves who was 71 was a much older and physically weaker individual who felt threatened by the 6 foot 4 inch Mr. Oulson. The law states that if an individual felt that their life was threatened in any sort of way, they are allowed to use weapons in defense.

In a three hour long discussion and several more hours of explaining by the retired police captain, the jury of six came to a conclusion of dropping all charges filed against him. Curtis spent long hours taking the jury through the situation that took place in 2014. He claimed that he had never felt more threatened to a point where he has to resort to using his weapon at any point during his entire career until that moment. He also briefed the court about his time with the Department of Law Enforcement.

The trend of police shootings in the United States has increased over the years with each incident stirring up more anger among the civilians against the law. During the year of 2022 alone, an estimated 20 killings have been reported in the US that have been linked to police officers. During the month of February alone, five killings have been reported all in different part of the country and at different times.

Stan Van Gundy, a former coach from the National Basketball Association (NBA) took to Twitter expressing his disappointment towards the law of the United States. He said, “Our state is a joke. It’s like we encourage shooting as a first response. The guy got killed because he texted in a movie theater and then tossed popcorn at a guy. Popcorn was deemed to be an imminent threat that justified murder. This is absurd.”

The player and staff of the NBA has been extremely expressive towards incidents as such. The killing of George Floyd was one that really affected the entire league.
