Former NBA player Brandon Hunter was declared dead on September 12. He was just 42. Hunter played for 2 seasons in the NBA, one with the Boston Celtics and another with the Orlando Magic. He was picked up in Round 2 of the 2003 draft. In the limited minutes he played, he averaged an excellent 45.7% and 50.7% FG shooting with the Celtics and Magic respectively.
After his stint in the NBA, Hunter went on to play in multiple International leagues. These included the Euroleague and the Italian Serie A. His best playing days, however, came when he was in college. He boasted an illustrious college career at Ohio University, where he became the university’s leading rebounder and was a three-time first-team all-MAC honoree. Additionally, in the 2002-2003 college season, Hunter averaged 21.5 points, 2.6 assists, 1.2 blocks and 0.8 steals. To add to that, he led the NCAA in rebounds that year and also had the most double-doubles(24) in the nation.
Hunter’s death was followed by an outpour of social media activity. Many gave their condolences. In fact, all the teams Hunter played for, like the Orlando Magic, sent out tweets expressing their sorrow.
Jeff Boals, head coach of Ohio’s basketball team sent out a heartfelt message that read, “Sad day for Bobcat Nation. Brandon Hunter, Gone way too soon. One of the best to ever put on the green and white.” He later followed it up saying, “Brandon was a great ambassador for Ohio, a great teammate, a great competitor, and a great family man. Brandon had an infectious personality that touched many people along his journey and will be truly missed. We are thinking about and praying for his wife Mary and three children during this time.”
Brandon Hunter’s cause of death

Amidst all these wishes and prayers for Brandon, a question still lingers. What caused Hunter’s demise? According to officials, Brandon frequented hot yoga classes. During one such class on Tuesday, Hunter collapsed. His death during a yoga session shocked his family since he was always in good health. His premature death has caused fans to speculate, with some suggesting the COVID-19 vaccine played a part.
The officials, however, have released no further statement regarding his death. Regardless of the cause, it is clear that the basketball world lost a good man today. Hunter is survived by his wife and their three children.
