Monty Williams is one of the more respected personalities going around in the NBA. He was the Head Coach of the Phoenix Suns and turned them into a formidable threatening side with aggressive gameplay of basketball. However, before the Suns, Williams was a part of multiple coaching staffs. He has been with teams like the San Antonio Spurs, Portland Trailblazers and New Orleans Pelicans.
Despite his impressive record as a coach in the NBA, Williams’ journey hasn’t been all glitters and gold. He was the associate head coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder from 2015-2016. It was in this year when he lost his wife, Ingrid Williams. Monty and Ingrid Williams were married for over two decades, having tied the knot in 1995. Since then, they also had five children with three daughters, Faith, Janna and Lael, as well as two sons, Elijah and Micah.
After the death of his wife, the Oklahoma City Thunder at the time had expressed their grief and sorrow. However, years later, when Monty Williams visited OKC with the Phoenix Suns, the Thunder management made a warm gesture. They had reserved a seat for Ingrid Williams, which was empty throughout the course of the game. Monty Williams spoke about the gesture too.
“For them to do that today really speaks to this organization and this city. God has blessed me and my kids and we’re here and we’re still rolling and a lot of it is because of good people in this organization. I just wanted to make sure that they were recognized. It’s kinda hard to not make it a public thing in situations like this. It’s good to give credit to and be grateful for good people that really really cool things.”

What happened to Ingrid Williams?
It was during his short tenure at Oklahoma City when an unfortunate tragedy took over the Williams family. Ingrid Williams met with an untimely car accident that led to her death in Oklahoma City. The accident occurred when an oncoming car crossed the center line and hit her SUV. While the other driver was announced dead at the scene, Williams was rushed to the hospital. She succumbed to her injuries later.
At the time, OKC was playing some of its best basketball, with Russell Westbrook and Kevin Durant leading their roster. The entire organization certainly admired Williams and mourned the loss of his wife. The OKC management also issued a statement of ‘deep sorrow’ and said the team would support Williams and his family whenever they needed it.
Following the news of Ingrid Williams’ death, many other names across the NBA were shocked and saddened by her demise. Despite it all, Monty Williams has been a strong soul and has focused on his coaching career. He was recently let go by the Phoenix Suns; however, he soon landed a head coaching job at the Detroit Pistons, who offered Williams a hefty contract. In fact, this made him the highest-paid head coach in the league.
