Reaves started his college career at Wichita State, where he was a sharpshooter from beyond the arc where he averaged 8.1 points per game as a sophomore and made 42.5 percent of his three-pointers. He underwent surgery on both of his shoulders to repair torn labrums that he had been playing through since high school. He also had a memorable performance against Tulsa in 2018, when he made seven threes in the first half, setting a program record.  

But he felt he needed a change of scenery and transferred to Oklahoma. He sat out a year due to NCAA rules and used that time to get stronger and improve his game. Reaves made an immediate impact for the Sooners in his junior season. He became a star for the Sooners, leading them in scoring in both his junior and senior seasons.

He earned first-team All-Big 12 honors and had some impressive outings, including a career-high 41 points against TCU in 2020 and 27 points against Gonzaga in the 2021 NCAA Tournament. As a senior, Reaves led Oklahoma in scoring with 18.3 points per game and also averaged 5.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game.

Reaves entered the 2021 draft hoping to hear his name called, but he was passed over by all 30 teams. He didn’t let that discourage him, though. He signed a two-way contract with the Lakers and impressed them with his confidence and versatility during training camp and preseason games.

He earned a spot on the Lakers’ roster and quickly became a fan favorite for his clutch performances. He hit a game-winner against the Clippers in December and scored 23 points in his playoff debut against the Grizzlies in April.
